“The year is 1962, and ad exec Martin K. Speckter has a punctuation problem.
Madison Avenue is debating the merits of a streamlined new European import called Helvetica. Roy Lichtenstein’s filling canvases with comic book characters and hand-painted typefaces. Andy Warhol’s cranking out Campbell’s soup cans in The Factory. Art is becoming commerce and commerce, art.
Meanwhile, JFK’s in office, the Vietnam War’s escalating, and The Pill’s finally received FDA approval. What’s needed is a typographically elegant way to notate surprise, disbelief, and incredulous excitement. For a single symbol to punctuate sentences like “Who’s that?!” and “What the hell?!”
Speckter’s solution? The interrobang. A stylish fusion of the question mark (that’s the “interro” part) and the exclamation point (known in old-timey typesetter’s slang as the “bang”), his unusual new creation looked like this.”

This is an interrobang. It should have become a punctuation mark, but it never really caught on. Maybe it will in the future, but probably not. The keyboard is pretty well standardized by this point, and people seem happy enough to say, “He hooked up with Sheila?!?!??!”
I think about the interrobang a lot when I am thinking about the habit we have, as a species, of assuming that the world in which we live was entirely inevitable—that we as contemporary humans are just along for the ride. But the truth is we all make up the world together as we go. We choose ?! over the interrobang. I know it feels like someone else has made this decision for us. But the truth is that together, we are making the decision right now.

Remember my love of the interrobang? I do.

Today’s warm up - on a piece of scrap bristol. Markers used: pitt pens, prisma color and shinhan touch. Finding the right value of grey for my skin is difficult, but I like this and love using the word ‘tomfoolery’ and there’s an interobang, favorite typographical symbol. Now to work on a few comics and get them scanned. Tomorrow is the first day of the next 100 days, i’m behind and excited like fuck! So many projects: class work and this and my (hopeful) eventual job. Here’s to staying on time for the comic!

I stumbled across the interrobang a few months ago when I was looking at typographic symbols and I fell in love. It is shameful that it’s so under utilized.

About

Enjoy some stupid things I find interesting from tumbler and from the internet. Periodically I write things here, written things mostly end up on my blog so it's mostly images and what not. Enjoy your stay, I hope something here makes you smile, it usually makes me smile, and on the periodic occasion disgusts me so much it deserves to be shared.
