Bear in mind that this is a technique that anyone can use on anyone about anything.
For example, you probably want to be suspicious when megacorporations start rebranding themselves as “diverse” and “sustainable”.

As part of the ratified WGA contract, the people will have access to the numbers that make up the viewership of shows and films in a transparent manner. This is going to be a massive boon for writers and actors wondering about residuals, and will also likely cause mayhem with fandoms and creators when exhibit proof is present of how popular or unpopular their shows and films are.
Fun times are about to be had by all.
Curious how, if at all, this will impact Netflix’s habit of killing off shows needlessly before their 3rd season.

its real… fibromyalgia is real… i mean its obviously real but. its real. ;_;
Oh…. Oh…………… ;_; indeed. Wow.
Here’s the study for more info
And a quick reader friendly summary of the findings
It’s always kind of been a bullshit “symptoms syndrome,” “go away shut up ‘diagnosis’” to me, which was NOT helped by there being no treatment ever offered other than “exercise and improve your mental health you’re just lazy and depressed and anxious and feeling exertion makes you more anxious (saying ‘exertion/exercise intolerance’ makes you go to hell for real) go to therapy” so like. actually seeing solid well researched evidence that no I’m not just a pathetic stupid clumsy weak person with no distress tolerance as I’ve very much internalized…. I am undone.

Anyone who knows me well enough knows that I’m fascinated by weird religious panics about kids’ pop culture from the last few decades, from D&D being accused of teaching kids witchcraft to He-Man being picked apart for occult symbolism. So I’m honestly surprised there hasn’t been some loud, widely-publicized moral panic about Steven Universe from the religious fundamentalist crowd yet. I mean, think about it, we have a popular cartoon show aimed at children that features:
- At least one canonical same-sex couple, as well as at least a couple major examples of same-sex attraction
- A main character who is stated to have been born out of wedlock and raised by a non-traditional family unit
- At least a few instances of “suggestive” dance moves
- Magic and violence being shown as a good and positive thing
- A major symbol for the good guys being a five-pointed star
- Use of mystical/magical crystals (fundies are still suspicious about that aspect of new age culture, right?)
- Seeing the future via a “third eye” (this is one thing I recall that fundies complaining about occult elements in cartoons back in the 80s LOVED to rail about)
- A character who uses shapeshifting to turn into animal forms (another aspect of “occult” religions and beliefs that 80s-era fundies got their undies in a bunch over) or even to transform from a female form to a male one
- A character who defies the gender binary and is attractive to both men AND women
I mean, I certainly wouldn’t agree with such a moral panic, but in a world where The Loud House can get yelled at by One Million Moms for featuring a pair of gay parents in one episode, I’m honestly baffled that this entire show managed to slip by the religious types’ radar.
Man, fundies really lost their touch since the Satanic Panic ended, huh?
they’re busy elsewhere
Seanan McGuire wrote an article a little while ago about how the original My Little Pony had some super dark plot lines and themes that no one, including conservative parents, seems to have ever been up in arms over. She mentioned that pretty, sparkly things aimed at girls could get away with stuff because no one expected the silly show for girls to do that.
“You could destroy the whole world, as long as you were willing to cover it in glitter first.” - Seanan McGuireAnd so I wonder if a similar thing is going on here. Look at the things named - He-Man, D&D, LEGO Batman - they’re all things expected to appeal more to boys. Steven Universe, despite the main male character, is aimed more at girls what with the big use of pastels and the Crystal Gems. So yeah, conservative groups haven’t looked past the precious stone names and the songs to see what’s going on.
That actually makes a lot of sense. One propaganda video from the height of the Satanic Panic that I love laughing at is “Deception of a Generation”, a video dedicated to pointing out all the alleged occult symbolism in children’s toys and cartoons. While girls’ franchises like My Little Pony, Barbie, and Rainbow Brite are briefly covered, they don’t get nearly the amount of analysis time as more masculine properties like He-Man, Transformers, Thundercats or Star Wars. Hell, the most attention any female-led cartoon gets in the program is during the segment focused on She-Ra, and that barely counts since it’s a spinoff of He-Man.

Such an awesome idea. More theaters should implement this kind of accessibility.
In the first trip across the United States ever made by an autonomous car, engineers from Delphi Automotive were surprised to learn that, in some cases, their vehicle behaved a lot like a human driver.
“The car was scared of tractor trailers,” said Jeff Owens, the company’s chief technology officer. “The car edged to the left just a little bit when it would pass trucks, and that was an interesting observation.”
Engineers made hundreds of notes throughout the drive, as the autonomous car covered 3,400 miles through 15 states en route to a showcase near the New York Auto Show. Overall, company officials said the car performed better than anticipated in a variety of road and weather conditions.
There are some things the engineers have already learned, like the fact the camera systems had the occasional blip when the sun-angle was low. And there are some things to still be learned, as they pour over three terrabytes worth of data from cameras, radar and lidar sensors in the weeks ahead.
“It’s going to take us a couple weeks to digest all this,” Owens said. “But we had all the data from tests. It was time to put this on the road.”
Built into an Audi SQ5, the vehicle was striking, if only for the fact it looked like a normal car. Many other autonomous vehicles have quirky sensors atop the roof or other features that make them stand out as experiments. Delphi arranged this one to look as much like a normal car as possible, right down to stowing an army of computers under cargo mats, so the rear contained as much trunk space as the production model.
If a fellow motorist didn’t know where to look — or take the time to notice the person in the driver’s seat didn’t have their hands on the wheel — there was no reason to suspect this was anything other than a regular car.
ENDLESS ELECTRICITY: Here’s A Way Of Turning America’s Roads Into Gigantic Solar Panels
There are about 31,251 square miles of roads, parking lots, driveways, playgrounds, bike paths, and sidewalks in the lower 48 states. If Julie and Scott Brusaw have their way, they will all someday be replaced with solar panels.
For the better part of a decade, the Idaho couple has been working on prototyping an industrial-strength panel that could withstand the weight of even the largest trucks. They now appear to have cracked the formula, developing a specially textured glass coating for the panels that can not only bear tremendous loads but also support standard tire traction.
By their reckoning, at peak installation their panelized roads could produce more than three times the electricity consumed in the U.S.
The material could power electric vehicles through a receiver plate mounted beneath the vehicle and a transmitter plate is installed in the road.
THIS IS UNBELIEVABLY IMPORTANT AND UNBELIEVABLY DISAPPOINTING THAT IT’S GOTTEN SUCH LITTLE ATTENTION.
PEOPLE THINK ABOUT IT, JUST HOW MANY ROADS THERE ARE ALL OVER THE WORLD AND HOW MUCH ENERGY COULD BE PRODUCED USING THESE LIKE SERIOUSLY “THREE TIMES THE ELECTRICITY CONSUMED IN THE U.S”. IT’S NOT JUST GOING TO HELP REDUCE THE AMOUNTS OF GREEN HOUSE EMISSIONS, IT’S GOING TO CREATE JOBS IN THE COUNTRIES IT’S USED IN. IT HAS SO MUCH EXTRA STUFF IT’S UNBELIEVABLE HOW AMAZING THE ROAD COULD BE.
THESE PEOPLE ARE SAINTS, THEY’VE WORKED THEIR BUTTS OFF AND VOLUNTEERS HAVE WORKED JUST AS HARD TO GET TO THIS LEVEL BUT THEY STILL HAVE JUST UNDER $ 800,000 TO RAISE IN 15 DAYS.
THIS SORTA STUFF IS HOW WE’RE GOING TO CREATE A GREENER EARTH AND IT’S BEEN VIRTUALLY IGNORED BY TUMBLR. WE NEED TO SUPPORT THIS STUFF AND THESE SORTS OF PEOPLE WHO SELFLESSLY DEDICATE THEIR WORK TO CREATING A BETTER WORLD.
PLEASASASASASSSSSSEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE PEOPLE NEED TO SEE THIS.

I’m interested in knowing how snow or rain would affect these. Or extreme heat, humidity, pretty much how does this fare in inclimate and variable weather. Trust, I find this to be fucking awesome and amazing, I just wanna know.

‘Body maps’ reveal what anger looks like
Humans describe emotions in a variety of ways.
Love makes our hearts swell, shame burns our faces, and depression makes us quite literally feel nothing.
Now science has proved that there’s some truth to how the human body experiences emotions.

Hey Crime fiction writers. Here’s an oft-cited reference chart to show you what different bullets look like going in and coming out.
“I am a writer…” I whisper as I reblog this.
Now I’m curious as to what part of the body these are all passing through…
Here is a tutorial on the history of “No Homo,” since many people apparently still need one.
very cool.
Here’s an awesome little piece of history:
Archaeologists in the Burnt City have discovered what appears to be an ancient prosthetic eye. What makes this discovery exceptionally awesome is the striking description of how the owner and her false eye would have appeared while she was still alive and blinking:
[The eye] has a hemispherical form and a diameter of just over 2.5 cm (1 inch). It consists of very light material, probably bitumen paste. The surface of the artificial eye is covered with a thin layer of gold, engraved with a central circle (representing the iris) and gold lines patterned like sun rays. The female remains found with the artificial eye was 1.82 m tall (6 feet), much taller than ordinary women of her time. On both sides of the eye are drilled tiny holes, through which a golden thread could hold the eyeball in place. Since microscopic research has shown that the eye socket showed clear imprints of the golden thread, the eyeball must have been worn during her lifetime. The woman’s skeleton has been dated to between 2900 and 2800 BCE.
So she was an extraordinarily tall woman walking around wearing an engraved golden eye patterned with rays like a tiny sun. What an awesome sight that must have been.

Introducing Tumble Tree! ~ Check out this thing I made that lets you see how posts are reblogged across Tumblr. It works on the dashboard or on most permalink pages, and you can sproing the branches around, filter notes by comments, save the tree as a picture blah blah blah. I’ve been using and testing it for the last couple of weeks and it’s pretty handy.
Go to tumble-tree.tumblr.com to try it out and install it. I guarantee you probably won’t die!
P.S. Yes this is why I haven’t posted much in the last couple of weeks. An example of how this works on the dashboard.
Okay this is pretty fucking cool if you like visual maps of the flow of information. Makes it far easier to map and identify tastemakers, etc.

After years of speculation, estimates and projections, the Census Bureau has made it official: White births are no longer a majority in the United States.
Non-Hispanic whites accounted for 49.6 percent of all births in the 12-month period that ended last July, according to Census Bureau data made public on Thursday, while minorities — including Hispanics, blacks, Asians and those of mixed race — reached 50.4 percent, representing a majority for the first time in the country’s history.
Such a turn has been long expected, but no one was certain when the moment would arrive — signaling a milestone for a nation whose government was founded by white Europeans and has wrestled mightily with issues of race, from the days of slavery, through a civil war, bitter civil rights battles and, most recently, highly charged debates over efforts to restrict immigration.
While over all, whites will remain a majority for some time, the fact that a younger generation is being born in which minorities are the majority has broad implications for the country’s economy, its political life and its identity. “This is an important tipping point,” said William H. Frey, the senior demographer at the Brookings Institution, describing the shift as a “transformation from a mostly white baby boomer culture to the more globalized multiethnic country that we are becoming.”
Signs that the country is evolving this way start with the Oval Office, and have swept hundreds of counties in recent years, with 348 in which whites are no longer in the majority. That number doubles when it comes to the toddler population, Mr. Frey said. Whites are no longer the majority in four states and the District of Columbia, and have slipped below half in many major metro areas, including New York, Las Vegas and Memphis.
The New York Times, “Whites Account for Under Half of Births in the U.S.”
Somewhere the Republican Party is blaming Obama for this.
