VEDA 22: happy Earth Day, Earthlings

Tunes by Wikiriffs http://youtube.com/wikiriffs and Hank Green http:/youtube.com/vlogbrothers

Takin’ care of business. It has been a horridly long time since I’ve really worked with plants. I accidentally broke some of the hosta, but there are a million of them, and as long as the bulbs are fine the rest of the plants will come back fine next year.

Seriously, if you want a hearty plant, check your climate zone, but hosta are so easy to take care of. They do well in partial light, that year is eastern facing and gets a ton of sun in the morning and is shaded by the tree by the time it gets hot. We’ve even been shit at watering them and they’ve come back every year, even going so far as to sprout root-bulbs that I need to pull up and spread out one of these days.

I was seriously tired today, and i got really cold (but that might just be me, I’m feeling warmer now) But plants and the earth. Do it up.

I’ve blogged this before but I think it’s something that bears remembering in the face of crushingly good art. At times you’ll think your stuff is rubbish. Possibly, it is rubbish. But it’ll never not be rubbish if all you do is sit around and complain about it.
So keep at it guys, love y’all.

Ira Glass speaks the truth.

been feeling so shitty about art lately (lol what else is new) but this little golden chunk of advice is so invaluable and correct. Love it. Take it to heart

It’s been a while since I’ve seen this, it’s always worth a re-read and a re-consider.

End of Formal Education: A Lazy Walk Through My Scholarly Life

It has been a long 19 years I the making but I’m finally reaching the end of my formal, school education.

I started school at the delightful age of 5, a bit before my 6th birthday I entered kindergarten at Terraset Elementary School in Reston, Virginia. A school designed by hippies that had partitions for rooms the school was divided into circular pods for the classroom areas of the school and the library. The front end was fairly normal shaped. I guess the most interesting design aspect of Terraset was that it was inside of a hill. They built it and then covered the back end of the building with enough soil that they were able to plant some might fine trees, honeysuckle and other plants on the roof of the building. The things you consider normal.

Selective Memory and My Worst School Year

I’ve always known I’ve intentionally forgotten stuff I didn’t want or need to remember. Once I decide something isn’t important enough to warrant I remember it I let it go as soon as possible. I think that’s why I’m bad at names, I don’t know if this person I’ve just met will be important to me or if I’ll ever see them again so why take the energy to commit them to memory if I’m going to interact with fifteen new people tomorrow? Facebook has both helped and hurt this. I’ll add someone then I’m going through my friends wondering who the fuck someone is and it’s someone I met at a house party 8 months earlier but their name is a reference to something else and their profile picture isn’t them. I sometimes delete these people unless I think they might be a part of a future social circle then they get to stay until the next time I purge my friends list.

There have been many studies about memory and how memories are tied to experiences, locations, people and so forth. I’ve recently interacted with the two people who were my best friends my freshman and sophomore years of school, Glenn and Elizabeth. Glenn was a grad student so I assumed our friendship would drop off a bit when he graduated, which it did because he went off to influence and be disgusted by the future minds of America (he teaches middle school history). Elizabeth was in my year and I’d assumed we’d stay friends, that didn’t quite happen because of a shitty manipulative relationship she had that has recently ended. For the past 3 years I never got close with anyone so it’s been interesting to have someone texting me wanting to hang out and talk about nothing important, something I’ve craved and wanted, and I’ve been too busy trying to get my comics done to be able to do that these past few weeks. I feel bad I can’t be there for her right now and I can’t indulge in my need to be important to someone else*. I have this dumb self esteem thing that no one cares about me. Intellectually I know people do but without the proof it’s hard to believe that anyone will miss me when I move away.

A few weeks ago I mentioned how I went out to Virginia Beach with some old friends I may or may not have named, they were Glenn and Elizabeth. While out at dinner we were reminiscing while working toward filling in the lost years we’ve had and Glenn reminded me of something I forgot entirely. I intentionally forgot why I hated this one girl who was my roommate my sophomore year of college because I decided that was too much energy and I needed to move on and not think about shitty things like that. I need to forget negative shit because I will dwell on it and I’ll get into a funk about it so it’s an important aspect of self perseveration for me, I think.

Hey, so I write here. I just set it up to cross-post my blogs so please be a champ and check them out. I just updated this on the 7th. I’m going to try to update this once a week, possibly more often depending on how interesting my life is and what my time is life. I have some long essays planned to post and then shorter term, shorter collection of thoughts that I’ll be sharing. So you know, be a champ, please?

Bunburying Preview

So, we got back around 11 last night from New York and I slept. I went to sleep a bit after midnight and I slept until ten this morning and then did nothing all day. I’m too tired and worn out. I went over to borjo and saw a friend working and was like ‘how?’ because she likes sleep a lot more than I do, I don’t know how she’s awake now. My legs hurt from being cramped on the bus and all the walking we did but I had a great time.

I have a tone of photos I took in New York, like this one from the Empire State Building Saturday night

And this one from High Like Park looking toward the Hudson River

I didn’t shoot inside the museums because I can find better photos of all the pieces on ArtStor, I enjoyed it. The walking was tiring but seeing Les Demoiselles d’Avignon in real life was pretty amazing. It was larger than I thought. And the Persistence of Memory was a lot smaller than I thought it was.

But the icing on the cake of a fantastic as fuck trip was going to Bergen Street Comics in Brooklyn and being able to meet Jonathan Ames. I was far too nervous to ask for a picture but we did talk for a few minutes which was fucking fantastic. It was outstanding. I will be smiling at the memory for ages. So unexpected.  It was also really cool to see some of Yuko Ota’s originals framed at Bergen Street. The Two Little Maidens was up, as was Driver’s Tan,  this Callie Eat’s Feather’s print and some Yo Gabba Gabba turn around and sketches (I think, they weren’t full pages i don’t think). There might have been another few pages from  JW but I don’t remember which they might have been.

—

I’ll do a complete write up on my blog soon and my pictures will go up on flickr possibly tomorrow once I go through them all. I’m fading fast and I’ve only really been out of bed for 4 hours. I spent my morning on twitter on my phone and reading a little bit. I think I’m going to try to draw something before I leave the coffeeshop, do something productive with my time.

Kid Lit

I was thinking a little bit about my favorite books as a kid, like big ridiculous picture books and once I progressed past the Eric Carle cardboard books (which I still find inventive and adorable) along with the Books with Holes for “There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Fly”. Almost every 90s kid knew what happened “If You Give A Mouse A Cookie”, a moose a muffin and a pig pancakes.

Then I hit my early introduction to surrealism with Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett, I mean, the slightly perverse Land of Chewandswallow, and the fact that the weather was food. Inventive, adorable, and weird like naught I’d seen before then, kind of, even if the book is ten years older than I. I think I also read Pickles to Pittsburgh, the sequel, but I know I loved and re-read that book multiple times. I didn’t see the movie because I didn’t care about why the weather was food, that information was not necessary to my enjoyment of the narrative so I skipped the movie and only have the book as my interaction with that narrative.

Another whacked out book I remember fondly was The Stinky Cheese Man and Other Fairly Stupid Tales. I remember being confused but enjoying the art and the shift on well known narratives. Also from the creative team of writer Jon Scieszka and artist Lane Smith that I loved was Math Curse, a tale a kid who’s life becomes overrun with numbers and math. My elementary school didn’t too many others, or I happened to not find them which is regrettable, I think now as an adult I may work on building my own collection of children’s books, for nostalgia but also because the narrative illustrative work is pretty great.

Looking over Scieszka’s Wikipedia page I just learned he did the Time Warp Trio, I loved those books, I had the first 3 or so.

My childhood was full of some pretty great reading. Inspire and encourage your kids to read. I mean, my all means, give them Dr. Seuss and the Bearstein Bears, but also give them oddities like The Stinky Cheese Man, some kids may just want something a bit weird to read. That could be the hook, you never know.

So, I went to the Chrysler Museum of Art to see the Diamond Dust exhibit while Judith Braun was working on it. You can see pictures of that here on Flickr. I decided to check out what else the museum was exhibiting because it’s been a few months, the last time I was at the Chrysler was back in August so I freaked out walking around and seeing the edge of the small gallery space devoted to pop art, I walked through and came across the love of my artistic life, surrealist work. (Well, after comics, or wrapped up in a sexy conflagration with comics and pop art). Seriously, seeing the Dali portrait I did that squeaky girly thing of flapping my hands and in general being quite out of character.

It was pretty great to see after having walked through the old Religious section, but they did have Bernini’s Jesus bust which I dubbed Talk To The Hand Jesus which I have an unnatural love for, but I’ve also seen it a bunch of times. I happened across a restoration in progress which was cool to see, I took a few photos. And the glass works I shot I apparently wasn’t supposed to photo, they’re on loan and not property of the Chrysler. Whoops. There was no ‘please no photography’ sign so I shot until a museum host politely asked me not to, and he was polite about it which was appreciated.

I have shot the piano before but holy fuck it’s beautiful. I lucked out, one of the museum hosts opened it so I could get that shot of the keys, I now I want to get more shots of the strings but I wouldn’t open the body, which is fair.

So, i’ve seen the new things but I am looking forward to getting a few other shots of the pop art exhibit, it is a small room but there’s a lot of things I didn’t shoot. They have a few pieces from The American Supermarket show so that’s kinda cool.

I straightened the photos before posting them to flickr who tired to ‘correct’ them but messed them up so I’ll take the time soon to straighten them all back out.

So, if you get the chance and you’re in the 757 the Diamond Dust piece will be up until September. If not there are a collection of time lapse photos and there is/will be a video too. There are a few other things I didn’t stop to take in because I decided to check out the new glassworks shop across the street. I’m thinking I might take a glass class, we’ll see if it’s an ODU course this fall, if not I might take one of their introductory classes because it’s not often you get to go into a glass blowing and working shop.

[Written Friday, Feb 17, 2012 - the same day of the visit] I have 2 little bits of video to post, I’m get them up on YouTube soon.

About

Enjoy some stupid things I find interesting from tumbler and from the internet. Periodically I write things here, written things mostly end up on my blog so it's mostly images and what not. Enjoy your stay, I hope something here makes you smile, it usually makes me smile, and on the periodic occasion disgusts me so much it deserves to be shared.
