If spiders make you nervous, you better sit this one out. A new study says that semi-aquatic spiders feeding on fish have been found all around the world! Photos
there are some fishing spiders that hang out in the stone wall along the riverwalk here. they get to be about 3 or 4 inches leg-span, and despite being scary-looking, are totally uninterested in humans. you can sit right next to one and watch it do its thing. unless you let your shadow fall on it; then it’ll run and hide.
These things happen.
If you live in the Chicago area and are looking for a new pet, go to the Calumet Area humane society. Pets there are going for $10-40 including all their shots, and every one is already spayed and neutered. They need to complete 650 adoptions by June 30th to win $100,000 for the shelter
(INDIGNANT HUFFING) NOT ALL M……ale lions
the more i think about it, the weirder this comment seems. how does this man know that being a male lion is more stressful than being a female lion. has he lived as both a female and male lion before. is this man an Animorph
also this is more proof of the intense fragility of masculinity
female lions care for the young and hunt, but somehow this dude feels the need to make it seem like male lions work harder and do all the fighting and patrol,… like…. have you ever watched any lion documentaries? female lions do this kinda shit too. they might not fight for “male dominance” of the pride, but they will kick a male’s ass if he’s some weak ass fedora-lion punk
that dude needs to calm his shit and realize that the males of any species are not automatically harder working
i feel like his comment should come with an image of a male lion looking lazy and laying around, wearing a fedora, saying, “this female lion wouldn’t let me mate with her, pridezoned again!”
my contribution to the defense of male lions everywhere
The Animal Rescue Site is having trouble getting enough people to click on it daily so they can meet their quota of getting FREE FOOD donated every day to abused and neglected animals in their shelters.
It takes less than a minute (only about 15 seconds actually) to go to their site and click on the purple box titled, ‘Click Here to Give - it’s FREE!’. Every click gives about .6 bowls of food to sheltered dogs. You can also click daily!
Keep in mind that this does not cost you a thing. Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate food to abandoned/neglected animals in exchange for advertising. [via.]

AN ORANGUTAN WALKS INTO A DOCTOR’S OFFICE ….. Veterinary staff members of the Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme center conducts medical examinations on a 14-year-old male orangutan found with air gun metal pellets embedded in his body in Sibolangit district in northern Sumatra island. The orangutan was rescued by Indonesia’s ministry of forestry personnel and Orangutan Information Center on April 15, 2014 in nearby Langkat district in a small patch of forest and agricultural plantation. The center has cared for over 280 orangutans rescued from palm oil plantations, poachers and pet owners and over 200 have been reintroduced in the wilds. The critically-endangered primates population are dwindling rapidly due to poaching and rapid destruction of their forest habitat that is being converted into palm oil plantation.

Photographer Bobby-Jo Clow found herself face-to-face with a cheetah cub who approached her Landrover while on safari at the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. She documented the curious cat’s looks of wonder and trepidation at the vehicle and its passengers.
I love that the one where he/she looks angry is the last photo taken.
My heart ^_^
I kind of stories about predator animals who think humans are too dumb to feed themselves and bring them food.
I’m terrified of the ocean but I love what inhabits it
I don’t know what this thing is but it can probably kill you in at least six horrible ways.
It’s a Spanish Dancer!! :D It’s a type of sea slug that eats poisonous animals for breakfast and then absorbs their toxic power for itself. Their badass menu includes sea sponges and Portugese Man-O-Wars.
God bless sea slugs
wiggly wiggly cutie
Best Dangerous Foods for Dogs signs i’ve ever found! Every practice should have this displayed in their waiting room!
Most of these are bad news for cats too!
Under medications, you’re looking out for anything containing paracetamol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen. Don’t give your animals human medications. Some human medications are used in animals but the dosages are different, as are the overdose limits. If you think your animal needs medication, go and see your vet.
For fatty foods, pancreatitis is not good but cats can also develop triaditis – inflammation of the pancreas, liver and intestines. Both these conditions can be fatal, difficult to treat and exceptionally painful. Cases will often recur later on in an animal’s life, too.
When it comes to food, feed them pet food and pet treats. Human food is stuffed with additives in a lot of cases and many animals have food allergies, just like people. Not to mention how calorific human food is to animals. 25g of cheese to a cat is the calorie equivalent of 3.5 fully-stacked hamburgers to a human. To a medium sized dog, that same amount of cheese is the equivalent of 2 large muffins.
Animals are all different too. Just because your friend’s dog was fine after eating a kilo of chocolate, doesn’t necessarily mean that your dog could tolerate having a small cookie.
Bones are bones. Cooked or otherwise. If your dog swallows a bone it has as much chance of shredding his guts as it does getting stuck. The same can happen with sticks you throw them. Get him a tough chew toy instead.
Another one to watch out for during winter is anti-freeze - the additive you put in your car to stop the fluids freezing up in the cold snaps. Ethylene glycol is the toxic bit. Anti-freeze tastes sweet to animals so you can bet if they find a puddle of it on the garage floor, they’ll lap it up. It causes kidney damage predominantly and often when the symptoms arise, it’s too late to help. Keep your anti-freeze products sealed and out of reach. Clean up any accidents with plenty of water.
For North America this website has a lot of good information on pet poisons.
For the British and English-speaking Europeans, a good source of information is here, including some information for our less common pets such as horses and rabbits.
The best advice for poisoning? Never wait. Never convince yourself ‘it was only a little bit’. Let the vet make that decision. A lot of orally-ingested poisons, if caught sharp-ish, can be counteracted. The sooner an animal can be treated, the better the chances for a return to normal health.
Think of it this way - if you had accidentally eaten something you knew was poisonous, would you wait before getting help?
I’m reblogging this back into to page as someone’s added some really helpful info on cats! So make sure to have a read of what they’ve said!
Robert Sapolsky about his study of the Keekorok baboon troop from National Geographic’s Stress: Portrait of a Killer.
Thiiiiiiis, people, thiiiis!
1. Kill alpha male types
2. Achieve world peace
I’ve actually read a lot of Sapolsky’s work. He’s one of my favorite scientists in the neuro/socio world.
I just watched the documentary and there is so much more about the troop that isn’t in this photoset—not only does the troop have a culture of little aggression and greater cooperation, but any incoming jerk baboons learned within a few months that their shitty behaviour was in no way acceptable, that the troop only rewarded sociability, and they changed accordingly.
If effin’ baboons can learn this there’s pretty much no reason to believe that our only option in dealing with assholes is to just ignore their behaviour and let it continue.
there really is no excuse.
"incoming jerk baboons" hahaha
This African Fish Can Catch and Eat Flying Birds
“During Smit’s study, published this month in the Journal of Fish Biology, he and his colleagues witnessed these fish jumping out of the water and snagging barn swallows, up to 20 times. Per day.”
See a video at Popular Science.
Finally a piscine win in the fish-bird feud. Take that osprey!
[CURRENT SCORE: Fish 1. Birds 689 bajillion.]
