Police officers in Norfolk, Virginia, responded to reports that a lion was on the loose. They urgently contacted the local zoo to see if any of their lions had escaped. But it turned out that the animal which terrified residents was actually a labradoodle named Charles, which had been shaved to look like a lion.  Picture: SWNS.com

Oh Norfolk… your headlines are so ridiculous.

frozensecond:

Our second rescue from beagles who have lived their entire lives inside a research laboratory. These beagles have known nothing except the confines of metal cages. They have known no soft human touch, no warm bed, no companionship, no love. They have never been outside or sniffed a tree or grass.

Finally, after years of being poked and prodded, these beagles are FREE! ARME got the call that a facility was willing to release them to us after they had been used in several tests. We picked them up on June 8th and now they are all in loving foster homes, and one has already been adopted. (Click here too see the video).

Glen Keane, the supervising animator on the Beast, created his own hybrid beast by combining the mane of a lion, the beard and head structure of a buffalo, the tusks and nose bridge of a wild boar, the heavily muscled brow of a gorilla, the legs and tail of a wolf, and the big and bulky body of a bear.

gaksdesigns:

New World Transparent Specimens by Lori Tomita. To produce the specimens… Tomita first removes the scales and skin of fish that have been preserved in formaldehyde. Next he soaks the creatures in a stain that dyes the cartilage blue. Tomita uses a digestive enzyme called trypsin, along with a host of other chemicals, to break down the proteins and muscles, halting the process just at the moment they become transparent but before they lose their form. The bones are then stained with red dye, and the brilliant beast is preserved in a jar of glycerin.

Look At These Snoozing Whales of the Day: This is how sperm whales sleep, but Matt Kaplan at Nature has the story behind this incredible shot:

A team led by Luke Rendell at the University of St Andrews [was] monitoring calls and behavior in sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) off the northern Chile coast when they accidentally drifted into the middle of a pod of whales hanging vertically in the water, their noses poking out of the surface. At least two of the whales were facing the boat, but not a single animal responded.
It was actually pretty scary. The boat had drifted into the group with its engine off [while] I was below decks making acoustic recordings. Once I saw the situation I decided the best thing to do was to try and sail our way out of the group rather than turn the engine on and have them all react.

An unusual trio.

Their name is Balu, Leo, and, of course, Shere Khan. Interspecies friendship between the three deadly predators started when all of them were two months old. Previously, they lived with drug lords, as a symbol of power and social status. Then, during a police raid, they were confiscated and placed in a zoo. Eight years have passed, a chorus of merry trio live in a shelter for animals of Locust Grove (USA, Georgia) and behaves like brothers. Eat, play and sleep together in the general house. Balu now weighs 450 kg, and Leo Sher Khan - to 160 kg. / click for more

About

Enjoy some stupid things I find interesting from tumbler and from the internet. Periodically I write things here, written things mostly end up on my blog so it's mostly images and what not. Enjoy your stay, I hope something here makes you smile, it usually makes me smile, and on the periodic occasion disgusts me so much it deserves to be shared.
