Camera versus iPad
I was taking photos of the de la Torres ob friday with my dslr. I have a Canon Rebel eos XS, it is one if the cheapest canons you can but that’s a dslr with a changeable lense. I bought it 2 years ago for $600 in an entire kit with a back up battery, sd card reader, bag with multiple pockets for lenses, lense cloth and some other trinkets.
I get compliments on this camera all the time. I don’t like to accept them because in the realm of dSLRs it’s s low end camera. People try to tell me it’s nice, and yes, it may be never than your ipad but a canon powershot is nicer than your ipad, hell, your iphone is nicer as a cagney and it’s a shit camera.
It’s not difficult to get an okay camera for little, but people are obsessed with having vogue shit.
So back to the de la Torres, I’m shooting them with my dslr because zooming and reaction times are faster than my point and shoots. I have three cameras, the dslr, a canon powershot elph and a canon something or other (i like canon, fuck off). I’m mostly sitting on one side because you can get a view more similar to what they’re seeing from this side as the piece is built. Profile on glass construction is better than looking down the blow pipe and not being able to really see what’s going on.
The hot shop is fairly empty, maybe ten people watching, a shame for everyone who left but they worked for two hours straight after taking a 30 minute break after finishing another piece that had to have taken at least 90 minutes.
So it’s empty in the hot shop so I’m bouncing around a bit more, ferrying photos from the other side and that Einar has going on the marver tables and I sit down next to this woman who has been taking photo and video on her ipad. I see her look at my camera and whisper to her friend it must be expensive. (the canon family all look the same at a glance, until you get to the c300) I resist the urge to say it cost as much or less than her ipad.
I mean, I look at the ipad and think “that’s some expensive shit i have no use for”. If I ever want to step up in the canon family I can keep the lense and just get the better body. My camera on it’s own is about $400 I think, our’s also old so I assume the newer eos xs has a better set of sensors and processors. I also looked at her thinking how dumb she looked holding such a low quality camera up when spending even $100 on a point and shoot would get far superior photos.
I’m not an Apple person, something i say without shame and without ridicule for people who like those products. I do criticize people who upgrade every year to some new shit that doesn’t with the way they want out to every time Apple says “jump”. IOS 6 came out, people jumped at the upgrade and got fucked. The iphone 5 is announced and sells out in hours, I haven’t heard much bitching about it but I guess people are just getting them now and complaints will ring out soon.
Hearing that my single device that does one thing good is expensive is dumb coming from finding who has a single device that does everything shittily, and possibly other devices from the same company that are all expensive. I’d rather have a good camera when u want a good camera instead of settling for a shitty camera because I didn’t all my money on an all-in-one and wasn’t able to specialize.
I guess this became less about having a dslr versus having an ipad and more about device specificity and having an all-in-one.
Man, I am ranty recently…this was better than trying to condense it for twitter.
